Many students and staff are experiencing symptoms which can include: runny nose, nasal congestion, watery/itchy eyes, post-nasal drip, coughing, sneezing, headache, irritability and fatigue.

Seasonal allergy symptoms can be quite annoying and distracting and can create difficulties concentrating in school. What can an allergy sufferer do to minimize their discomfort? While allergies can’t be cured, there are steps you can take to relieve seasonal allergy symptoms or avoid getting the symptoms. Continue reading

Kindness Matters

Kindness matters in life. From time to time, parents will ask me, “Does your school teach the value of kindness?” It is a good question. Who is responsible for making sure that kindness is taught? Because kindness matters!

Research by Dr. Sara Konrath at the University of Michigan suggests that in the past 30 years, self-reported concern for others — a kindness barometer if you will — has been steadily declining. Konrath’s study shows that right now, compassion and empathy are at their lowest point in more than 30 years. Continue reading

Kingsbury’s HOPE Program Serves the Disenfranchised

The Need for HOPE

The statistics are not encouraging. Students with Learning Disabilities (LD) continue to experience one of the highest drop-out rates among all students with disabilities (other than those with emotional disturbance). Their inability to complete traditional high school programs is due to any number of factors, including a history of school failure, learning differences that have gone undiagnosed and/or untreated, parenthood, economic hardship or other societal issues. Mark Dennis, who teaches fitness to Kingsbury’s Middle School students, is a certified reflexologist. He authored this blog, based on his experience providing reflexology massage and nutrition advice to children with ADHD. 

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the more common mental disorders that are known to begin in early childhood. An estimated 10 percent of all children worldwide are diagnosed with ADHD. They may exhibit inattention, impulse control issues, restless feet, frequent change of position and a marked loss of hand-eye coordination. Continue reading

Coaching Student-Athletes with Learning Differences

Joe MKingsbury’s Athletic Director and JV Basketball Coach, Mr. Stephon Hampton, and Mr. Joe Moten, Boys Varsity Basketball Coach, were interviewed following their successful seasons. Winning the 2015 League championships was a remarkable achievement given the fact that Kingsbury lacks a gymnasium. The teams practice on the outdoor basketball court and run drills and do weight training inside the building. Our student-athletes compete in a league consisting of teams from schools that serve students with learning differences, as well as charter schools and private schools without an LD focus.
